Day 3 - Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes

In 1388, after the collapse of the Yuan dynasty, invaders sacked the city, leaving ruins and a tragic history. Two centuries later, Erdene Zuu, the first Mongolian Buddhist monastery, was built in 1586 using materials from the Karakorum ruins. At its peak, the complex housed over 1000 lamas and boasted ornate gardens and 62 temples. However, the communist purges of 1937 led to the complete destruction of the monastery.
