SHORT DESCRIPTION
Mongolia, often called the "Land of the Blue Sky," experiences around 250 cloudless days annually. Winters, lasting from November to March, bring freezing temperatures, with averages around -25 °C (-13 °F) and potential drops to -35 °C (−34 °F). Nomadic Kazakh shepherds in western Mongolia engage in a seasonal spring migration, moving horses, camels, yaks, cattle, sheep, and goats from winter to spring pastures. This journey spans approximately 150 km across the Altai mountains and takes five to six days. The nomads, renowned for eagle hunting, face challenges like crossing frozen lakes and mountain passes. The migration involves herders, livestock, and camels carrying essential supplies, including frozen meat and a stove for cooking. The nomadic diet relies heavily on meat and dairy due to limited vegetable availability. Drovers' huts, provided by the Mongolian government, offer shelter at key spots and mountain passes. The migration begins before dawn, with herders using long-wave radios for weather updates. Challenges include dust storms in lower sections and harsh weather in higher altitudes, reaching -40°C. MEALS
In Mongolia, dining will take place at fine American, European, and Asian cuisine restaurants. The Mongolian diet primarily consists of mutton, beef, rice, and noodles, forming the basis of your meals. Trail rations may include vegetables, eggs, peanut butter, cheese, and occasionally yak!
